Engineering Applications – The Morning

The morning session of your Engineering Work Experience & Careers Day focuses on the pathway to studying engineering at university and the wide range of careers it can lead to.

We begin by exploring where an engineering degree can take you. Engineering is one of the most diverse and impactful professions, with graduates working across sectors such as infrastructure, energy, aerospace, technology and manufacturing.

You’ll learn about the different degree options available, including BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) programmes, which typically take three years, and the option to extend to an MEng (Master of Engineering) with an additional year of study. We’ll also discuss specialist routes such as Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and other engineering disciplines.

From there, we map out the academic pathway required to secure a university place. Most engineering courses prefer strong A-level results in Mathematics and Physics, alongside other sciences. Entry requirements vary between institutions, with more competitive universities requiring top grades.

You’ll gain a clear understanding of:

  • Subject choices at school

  • Grade expectations

  • How to strengthen your application

  • The skills and attributes engineering faculties look for

Engineering Work Experience – The Afternoon

After lunch, the focus shifts to structured virtual engineering work experience.

While engineering covers many disciplines, our practical task centres on Structural Engineering. Working alongside other students, you’ll be challenged to recommend an appropriate bridge design for a new construction project.

This interactive project will require you to consider:

  • Engineering calculations

  • Design decisions

  • Environmental impact

  • Cost trade-offs

  • Risk analysis

  • Construction methodology

The aim is to give you genuine insight into how engineers think, problem-solve and make decisions in real-world scenarios.

We conclude the day with a live Q&A session, giving you the opportunity to ask questions about engineering degrees, career pathways and life as an engineer.

By the end of the course, you’ll have a detailed understanding of the profession, clarity on how to secure a university place, practical work experience examples to reference in applications, and a certificate of completion to support your future studies.
