Vet Work Experience & Career Day

Being a vet is fast paced, satisfying and also one of the most complex jobs there is. Our online careers day aims to break down some of the myths surrounding the job, give you an overview of how to become a vet and give you some meaningful veterinary work experience that will give you an advantage when it comes to your university applications.

veterinary medicine Applications - The Morning

In the first part of the day we'll go through exactly what you need to do to apply to veterinary medicine. Beginning with what subjects you should take at GCSE/A-level and the grades required, we'll map out your route to studying veterinary medicine at university.

There are far more applicants than spaces each year in universities to study to become a vet so you’ll need to be well armed with all the know how on how to get that elusive space. After an overview of the career and what grades you’ll require, we’ll move onto the personal statement for veterinary medicine. Your 47 lines in which to impress and secure that all important interview.

Now you’re well equipped to write a compelling personal statement and have some idea about where you may wish to apply, we’ll talk about being offered a veterinary medicine interview and what you can expect on the day.

We’ll discuss as a group some ethical questions that you may be asked during your interviews and discuss responses together, the interview is designed to test your ethics, understanding of the profession and ultimately to assess whether or not the interview panel deem you ready and a good applicant for their course. It’s really all about practice here, practicing questions and scenarios through role plays and getting you ready to face any question that may be thrown at you.

After a break for lunch, it’s time to return to the online classroom for your afternoon Veterinary work experience session.

Vet Work Experience - The Afternoon

In your afternoon session, we’ll concentrate on veterinary medicine work experience. This is a vital component for a successful application to vet school.

We spend the afternoon with our vet talking about how different animals are treated, using case studies, you’ll help the vet diagnose and treat a variety of animals, all with the aim of giving you an insight into the career and some great work experience to use in your university applications.

We’ll also spend time in the afternoon learning about life as a vet. We will explain how we classify animals, the different approaches to treating animals depending on their size and complexity of their biology and the challenges they face when it comes to giving a diagnosis for an animal. Students will get to practice history taking and learn about clinical examinations all with the aim of providing some great work experience material for students to use in their applications and interviews.
