Law School Applications: how to apply successfully for Law - The Morning

Our law careers day is ran by current lawyers and law students. In the first part of the day we'll go through exactly what you need to do to apply to law school. Beginning with what subjects you should take at GCSE/A-level and the grades required, we'll map out your route to law school.

Law is such a diverse subject to study at university. There are so many careers it can lead onto both directly and indirectly related to law. We’ll go through all of these in detail during the course so students can have a clearer understanding of their prospects post graduation after choosing to study law at university.

Before a student applies to law, it’s important to make sure 100% that it’s the degree course for them. Law is regarded as a very prestigious career but it’s certainly not a career for everyone. We’ll make sure you are armed with all the information to make an informed decision.

The first part of the day is spent looking into what makes a successful applicant to law. We start the day by going through personal statements. This is your 47 lines to impress your desire to study law, and is of vital importance if you are looking to secure a place in university for this very competitive degree course.

Our tutors have seen it all when it comes to personal statements for law and through showing you both good and bad examples, you’ll get a good handle on what a successful applicant looks like.

The next part of the morning is concerned with choosing the right degree course and university. With such a range of options, we’ll guide you through them so at the very least you can have a shortlist and understand the differences between each law school, the courses offered and the entry requirements for each one.

We’ll then cover the LNAT examination that several universities require students to sit. As there’s no official subject requirements for law, the LNAT is designed and used by several universities to test an applicants comprehension skills, analysis, and deduction abilities.

Law Work Experience - The Afternoon

The second part of the day is practical based where lawyers will take you through some of their day-to-day work. We’ll teach students the essentials of any career in law, namely teamwork, interpretation skills, critical thinking and public speaking.

We’ll delve into a commercial case study where you will help advise a client involved in a real life merger. Later, you’ll help solve an interactive legal problem to determine whether the legal test for murder has been met for a set of facts.

This interactive afternoon session is some great exposure to a career in law, led by practising lawyers.

Law work experience is so important to a university application and we’ll spend time giving students ideas of where to find more work experience, the different types of law work you could undertake and why law schools require all applicants to have experienced different parts of the career they are looking to embark upon. Our law students and lawyers have experienced all of this first hand so you’ll be able to hear exactly how and what they did to secure their place in law school.

We round off the afternoon by hosting a Q&A session with our lawyers which is your chance to ask them anything you would like to know about the profession, from applying to their day to day work.

The whole careers day is designed and tailored for students aged 13-18 who are considering law as a career choice and we'll make sure you leave the day fully prepared for your future career, with a clear plan of what it's going to take to give you the very best chance of success and to secure that spot in law school.

You’ll receive a certificate for the law work experience portion of the day with advice on how you can use this experience in your applications.
